FOCUS OF THE STUDY
According
to many researchers, differentiated instruction is one of the finest teachings
methodologies to apply in teaching. The
aim of the study is to examine the teacher perceptions, practices and
challenges of differentiated instruction in School. The new curriculum of the Maldives is mainly
focused on preparing children for life. For
this reason, improving student’s academic achievement is one of the biggest
issues facing almost every school. As
I mentioned at the start, differentiated instruction is one of the finest
teaching methodologies to apply in teaching, because differentiated instruction
is a very helpful and meaningful way for teachers to increase students’
academic achievement by allowing them to achieve from the diverse learning
needs of all the students.
However,
there are many challenges for applying differentiated instruction in everyday
teaching. One of the biggest reasons for
not applying differentiated instruction is one teacher catering to almost thirty
students with different learning abilities and interests at the same time. Additionally, the time provided for each
period is also too short for this amount of students for applying differentiated
instruction in everyday teaching. Due to this reason, many teachers do not
differentiate instructions on regular basis. I agree that not applying
differentiated instruction in everyday teaching is a big disadvantage for
students, because this takes away them from reaching their learning potential,
at the same time, it also affects the adequate yearly progress of the schools.
