Should students be Taught typing instead of writing?
In my view, this type of teaching is not only outdated but deliberately delaying children potential. And parents complain when kids can't form letters correctly. "Colouring" is teaching children how to fine-tune and strengthen muscles in their arms and hands so they will be able to have the manual dexterity to do things such as write and cut. There is a place in the classroom for this, however, there is also a place for self-expression and creativity. It takes a great teacher to know how to balance these activities. If it's not okay for children to write like this then it isn't okay for them to colour this way either, since colouring is a precursor to writing.
Colouring in the lines is a skill that is taught and developed. It leads to spatial reasoning and the ability to encode words on paper. It helps in reading, writing, and math. Why not ask the teacher why they are squashing your child's precious creativity instead of demonizing their attempts to help your child grow, mature muscles, and gain the set of skills necessary to become an emergent reader and writer. If your child is artistically inclined. They will rise above this wholly accepted cultural norm. I think without the faces could use it positively to encourage persistence and pride in work. More as a reference for those kids who scribble or rush pictures because they either don't think they're any good or don't know how to. Pictures are just as valuable as text how "art" was taught to me in kindergarten years ago. Each day the teacher demonstrated the "right" way to draw something, and the children's drawings were supposed to follow that template. If you coloured outside the lines, used the wrong colour, or used the wrong shape in your design, the teacher would tell you it wasn't good enough. Talk about killing creativity and exploration, not to mention individuality... I was personally impressed by the pencil control, thought and knowledge that has gone into the pictures. I always thought we were encouraging the process, not the end product. We want our children to be free thinkers, masters of their own agendas and feel empowered. Not soldiers who are told what to do and how to think. e.g. conforming to how society wants people to be.
Brainstorming, putting ideas down on paper, ensuring the language and thoughts flow and revising for typos and errors are all different steps in the process of writing. Children need to understand that a perfect sentence doesn’t just come out of nowhere, it develops through a back and forth process as the writer writes, reviews and revises his or her text. This is one reason it’s helpful for kids to write on a computer as it saves erasing and allows children to make multiple attempts at getting their thoughts down until they find the phrasing they want. Word processors also make it more efficient to reorganize longer pieces of writing, to help information flow better.
Kids learn to write through example. Completing an initial draft alone is sometimes important, particularly if the task requires sharing personal thoughts and experiences, but it also helps to have someone else there to review it. Parents can make a huge difference in how their children’s writing skills improve by agreeing to read early drafts. Use the child’s words to suggest optimized phrasing and/or help them pinpoint what they are trying to say through conversation. This makes it easier for the ideas to be written down.
Creative tasks foster positive associations with writing, so children see it not just as an activity for learning and reporting information at school, but a way of getting their thoughts across. It doesn’t matter who reads what they are writing or even what it is about, it’s just a good idea if it becomes a regular activity. Parents might suggest keeping a personal diary with a journal entry a day resulting in a special treat at the end of the week. It’s also important for teachers to encourage any and every opportunity for writing, as the more kids write, the more they will improve and hone their skills.
The use of ICT as a form of classroom technology is of advantage to people of all ages starting from school. The reason why teachers need to use ICT in the classroom is that it grabs the interest of children for they have access to many types of interesting technology and they, therefore, need to have classes that interest them too. They can improve their knowledge and have fun at the same time by using various forms of ICT equipment. This equipment also provides students with a variety of ways to learn. The use of ICT in schools has a positive effect on students for it makes them conversant with technology.
The use of ICT in classrooms has the probability of improving the standard and quality of education for students. It is also beneficial for the teachers in that it helps them in simplifying their work. It reduces the time required by teachers to plan for lessons and the extra time it would take to follow up on the students. They can also access the information available on the internet without the teacher's presence. ICT in the classroom is also ideal for language teachers for they use the technology to make learning new languages easier. The use of ICT equipment like computers as classroom technology gives the students the ability to revise. Classroom technology is a necessary tool for teachers to use if they want their students to succeed and they should, therefore, consider the use of the many forms of ICT equipment available for teaching lessons.
