How to
Use Discovery Learning In Teaching Social Studies
Discovery learning is an
inquiry-based, constructivist learning theory that takes place in
problem solving situations where the learner draws on his or her own past
experience and existing knowledge to discover facts and relationships and new
truths to be learned Discovery Learning is one of the
general social studies strategies. The social studies book describes
this strategy on any activity that the teacher gives,. And help students find
answers on a particular topic through problem solving.
The main times
that discovery learning is used in the classroom are during problem
solving exercises and educational programs. Students will
undergo discovery learning when they are looking at their own experiences
and knowledge in their studies, and enquiring about further information to
improve their understanding.
Teacher can use
discovery method in any topic of social studies. Here is a way we can use
discovery method on the strand of key stage 2, People, Places and
Environment, (sub strand The world in spatial terms.)
Unit 3:
My Environment
My Environment
Topic: Weather
Explain and discuss
about the weather.
Assign the students to find and record the
climate changes for a month.
They should observe
and record the temperature, how every day’s weather is, the direction of wind
and how much rain falls for 1 month.
After one month the
students should present and post their observation to the class as a graph and
a poster.
This is a way we can
use discovery learning in teaching social studies.
